While the Babylonian king Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) subdues the people of Israel, destroys their temple and wants to make himself God, his adopted daughter Abigaile, consumed by ambition, jealousy and hatred, tries to get rid of her sister Fenena and thereby both the to win her father's throne as well as the love of the Hebrew Ismaele who is related to her sister.

Based on an episode from the Old Testament, Giuseppe Verdi created a worldwide success with the opera Nabucco . The composer masterfully succeeded in giving an oppressed people or a religious community a voice in the form of his opera choirs and expressing their hopes and rebellion in effective tableaus. In the open air, this opera, full of large, highly emotional choral numbers, unfolds religious and political conflicts as well as the suffering of the oppressed and the unscrupulous lust for power of individuals.

Während der babylonische König Nabucco (Nebukadnezar) das Volk der Israeliten unterwirft, ihren Tempel zerstört und sich selbst zum Gott erheben will, versucht seine von Ehrgeiz, Eifersucht und Hass zerfressene, adoptierte Tochter Abigaille ihre Schwester Fenena aus dem Weg zu räumen und dadurch sowohl den Thron ihres Vaters als auch die Liebe des mit der Schwester verbandelten Hebräers Ismaele für sich zu gewinnen.

Basierend auf einer Episode aus dem Alten Testament erschuf Giuseppe Verdi mit der Oper Nabucco einen Welterfolg. Auf meisterhafte Weise gelang es dem Komponisten hiermit einem unterdrückten Volk bzw. einer Religionsgemeinschaft in Form seiner Opernchöre eine Stimme zu verleihen und ihren Hoffnungen und ihrem Aufbegehren in effektvollen Tableaus Ausdruck zu geben. Unter freiem Himmel entfaltet diese Oper voll großer, hochemotionaler Chornummern religiöse und politische Konflikte ebenso wie das Leid der Unterdrückten und die gewissenlose Machtgier einzelner.
