One of the most popular works by Giuseppe Verdi returns to the festival thanks to the Spanish Royal Theatre. This masterpiece with a splendid libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the Old Testament and Francis Cornue and Anicète Bourgeois’ Nebuchadnezzar, portrays ancient Babylon in all its splendour and tells the story of the Jewish slaves who, with the support of the priest Zaccaria, fought for their faith and freedom. This opera in four acts first premiered in Milan’s La Scala theatre in 1842 and was the first great success by the composer from Busseto, turning with time into an essential title for any major opera house’s repertoire. The work reveals a unique moment in the history of the genre with the choir of Hebrew slaves “Va pensiero”, a chant to freedom that at the time of its premiere the audience turned into a symbol of the Risorgimento in the face of the situation lived by the people of what would eventually become Italy, then ruled over by the Habsburg dynasty. But the opera also presents us with the first great father, the first great female role and the first vocal approximation to the baritone, with a style and personality that would then go on to influence other characters such as Macbeth, Rigoletto and Falstaff. The concert version that will be hosted at Peralada with the Spanish Royal Theatre Choir and Orchestra and the direction of Nicola Luisotti will count with the voices of George Pétean (Nabucco), Anna Pirozzi (Abigaille) and Dmitry Belosselskiy (Zaccaria). Verdi walks us along the paths of these characters’ minds with an outstanding orchestral score that accompanies the story from the first act all the way to the its tragic end.

Vuelve al Festival de la mano del Teatro Real uno de los títulos más populares de Giuseppe Verdi. Esta obra maestra con magnífico libreto de Temistocle Solera, establecida en el Antiguo Testamento y en la obra Nabucodonosor de Francis Cornue y Anicète Bourgeois, se representa en la antigua Babilonia con todo su esplendor, y explica la historia de los esclavos judíos que, con el apoyo del sacerdote Zaccaria, luchan por su fe y libertad. Estrenada en la Scala de Milán en 1842, esta ópera en cuatro actos fue el primer gran éxito del compositor de Busseto y, con el paso de los años, se convirtió en uno de los títulos imprescindibles en la historia de los grandes coliseos de ópera. La obra nos revela un momento único en la historia del género con el coro de esclavos hebreos Va pensiero, un canto a la libertad que, en el momento de su estreno, el público hizo suyo como símbolo del Risorgimento ante la situación que vivían los pueblos de la futura Italia bajo dominio de la dinastía de los Habsburgo. Pero la ópera también nos presenta al primer gran padre, el primer gran papel femenino y también la primera aproximación vocal al barítono con estilo y personalidad propia que después se repetirían en otros personajes como Macbeth, Rigoletto o Falstaff. La versión concierto que ofrecerá Peralada con el Coro y Orquesta del Teatro Real bajo la solvente batuta de Nicola Luisotti contará con las grandes voces de George Petean (Nabucco), Anna Pirozzi (Abigaille) y Dmitry Belosselskiy (Zaccaria). Con estos personajes, Verdi nos conduce por los caminos del psicologismo sin olvidar nunca el papel y la fuerza orquestal, que a partir del primer acto va desarrollando la historia hasta desembocar en la tragedia final.
