An operatic extravaganza. Stéphane leads us on a journey through 300 years of heart-stopping melodies, captivating drama, and thrilling dances. The fanfare from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, one of the very first operas, sets us on a path through Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, Bellini, and Ponchielli’s “Dance of the Hours,” now best known as the hippopotamus ballet from Fantasia. The SLSO’s Associate Concertmaster Erin Schreiber gives a virtuoso turn in Sarasate’s Fantasy on Bizet’s Carmen. Associate Principal Cello Melissa Brooks performs Bellini’s mellifluous melodies  

A few things to know: 

Stéphane’s journey takes us on a roughly chronological journey, from one of the first operas in history to the 18th and 19th centuries. This program is a chance to experience some of opera’s most beautiful orchestral moments. 

Sequel. Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Rossini’s Barber of Seville are linked. Both are based on plays by the French writer Beaumarchais and include the same cast of characters, including the sweet-hearted servant Figaro getting even with the underhanded Count Almaviva. 

Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy is considered one of the most technically challenging works in the violin repertoire. Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate was world-famous at 15, and wrote reams of music for his instrument. The Carmen Fantasy demands almost every single advanced technique known at the time.
