For several years now, Sir András Schiff has been asking concert halls for carte blanche for his recitals. It is only on the morning of the concert itself that he finalises the programme that he will play. He has thus already twice taken DE SINGEL on a fascinating journey through pianoland. For his concert with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, he is obliged to show his hand, No Bach, Mozart or Schubert this time, but two concert pieces by Robert Schumann. In a short waterfall of chords, the pianist immediately makes his mark as a soloist in the Piano Concerto. It speaks volumes about the mastery of Clara Schumann, who performed it for the first time in 1845. Worthy of note is that four years later, Schumann wrote an Introduction and Allegro Appassionato. Here too comes a blazing display of bravura by the soloist. We get a different kind of enchantment from Schiff as a conductor. He leads the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as conductor in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn. Music that went on to become a role model for Romantic music.

Sir András Schiff vraagt concertzalen al enkele jaren carte blanche voor zijn recitals. Pas op de ochtend van het concert zelf bepaalt hij het programma dat hij zal spelen. Zo nam hij DE SINGEL al twee keer mee op een boeiende reis door pianoland. Voor het concert met het Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment moet hij wel in zijn kaarten laten kijken. Geen Bach, Mozart of Schubert deze keer, maar twee concertstukken van Robert Schumann. In een korte waterval aan akkoorden eist de pianist in het Pianoconcerto meteen z'n terrein als solist op. Het zegt veel over het meesterschap van Clara Schumann die het in 1845 voor de eerste keer uitvoerde. Opvallend: vier jaar later schrijft Schumann een Introductie en Allegro Appassionato. Ook hier is de solist vol bravoure aan zet. Een andere soort betovering krijgen we van Schiff als dirigent. Hij leidt het Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment als dirigent in Een Midzomernachtsdroom van Felix Mendelssohn. Muziek die een rolmodel zou worden voor romantische orkestmuziek.

À deux reprises déjà, il a ainsi entraîné DE SINGEL dans un périple passionnant au pays du piano. Pour ce concert avec l'Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, il a bien dû révéler ses intentions. Cette fois-ci, pas de Bach, Mozart ou Schubert, mais deux pièces de concert de Robert Schumann. Au moyen de la brève avalanche d'accords du Concerto pour piano, le soliste s'impose dès le départ. L'œuvre témoigne de la maîtrise de Clara Schumann, sa première interprète en 1845. Détail remarquable : Schumann a écrit quatre ans après une Introduction et un Allegro Appassionato, dans lesquels le soliste peut aussi faire preuve de bravoure. Mais Schiff nous enchante également en tant que chef d'orchestre à la tête de l'Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, avec Le Songe d'une nuit d'été de Felix Mendelssohn. Cette composition a inspiré d'autres auteurs d'œuvres orchestrales romantiques.
