Otello ist ein Aussenseiter, ein Fremder in der Gesellschaft, in der er lebt und in der er überaus erfolgreich eine führende Machtposition innehat. Das bringt ihm viele Neider und Feinde. Einer der grössten ist Jago. Er kennt Otellos wundesten Punkt: Die Leidenschaft für seine Frau Desdemona – und seine unbeherrschte Eifersucht. Jago sät in Otello den Verdacht, Desdemona betrüge ihn mit seinem Vertrauten Cassio. Geschickt streut er angebliche Beweise für seine Vermutungen, denen Otello sofort erliegt. Das Drama nimmt seinen Lauf.

Calixto Bieito, Artist in Residence am Theater Basel, wird sich in «Otello» nach «Don Carlos» und «Aida» erneut mit einer der grossen, düsteren Verdi-Opern über Macht, Misstrauen und zwischenmenschliche Demütigungen auseinandersetzen. Die musikalische Leitung hat Gabriel Feltz. Es spielt das Sinfonieorchester Basel.

Otello is an outsider, a stranger to the society in which he lives and in which he has held a position of leadership with great success. This brings him many envious and enemies. One of the biggest is Jago. He knows Otello's weakest point: his passion for his wife Desdemona - and his uncontrolled jealousy. Iago sows the suspicion in Otello that Desdemona is cheating on him with his confidante Cassio. He skillfully scatters alleged evidence for his suspicions, which Otello immediately succumbs to. The drama takes its course.

After Don Carlos and Aida, Calixto Bieito, Artist in Residence at the Theater Basel, will again deal with one of the great, dark Verdi operas about power, mistrust and interpersonal humiliation in “Otello”. Gabriel Feltz is the musical director. The Basel Symphony Orchestra is playing.
