Our honorary conductor is a wise man – and holds the opinion that worldwide or very private crises reinforce the desire for spiritual nourishment in concert experiences: »Music has a very special significance in our time. Schumann said: The purpose of the musician is to shed light into the depths of the human soul. Light in the darkness: We all have a darkroom in our soul. There is illness or disappointment in life. And one needs light in this darkness – and this is what music can do.« The two pieces Herbert Blomstedt will conduct for us are perfectly suited as spiritual mourishment: Mozart‘s triumphant »Jupiter Symphony« from 1788 is seen as the artistic pinnacle of his creative work. As was often the case in his life, he was struggling with the hardships of everyday life at that time, and so the Andante in particular encapsulates a whole range of musical feelings – from intense inwardness to passion and aching sadness to the grandiose. Otherwise, however, the symphony is an optimistically shining piece in luminous C major – its later added title emphasising the power of the heavenly father and light-bringer Jupiter, the supreme deity in Roman mythology. Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, for whose interpretation we welcome the masterful pianist Maria João Pires, was also composed in 1806 during a worrisome time: the agonies of deafness and the loneliness associated with it increasingly troubled the composer – and he once said: »Music is the climate of my soul.« When composing this grandiose work, Beethoven is believed to have been thinking of the Greek myth of the legendary poet-musician Orpheus, who subdued the dark demons of the underworld with his beguiling sounds.

Unser Ehrendirigent ist ein weiser Mann – und der Meinung, dass weltweite oder auch ganz private Krisen das Bedürfnis nach seelischer Nahrung durch Konzerterlebnisse verstärken: »Die Musik hat in unserer Zeit eine ganz besondere Bedeutung. Schumann hat ja gesagt: Aufgabe des Musikers ist es, Licht zu senden in die Tiefe der menschlichen Seele. Licht in der Dunkelheit: Wir haben ja alle eine Dunkelkammer in unserer Seele. Krankheit oder Enttäuschung im Leben. Und man braucht Licht in dieser Dunkelheit – und das kann Musik machen. « Die beiden Werke, durch die uns Herbert Blomstedt leiten wird, sind hervorragend als musikalisches Seelenfutter geeignet: Mozarts triumphale »Jupiter-Symphonie« aus dem Jahr 1788 gilt als künstlerischer Gipfelpunkt seines Schaffens. Wie oft in seinem Leben kämpfte er damals mit den Widrigkeiten des Alltags und so umfasst gerade das Andante eine ganze Skala von musikalischen Empfindungen – von konzentrierter Innerlichkeit über Leidenschaft und schmerzliche Trauer bis zum Erhabenen. Doch ansonsten ist die Symphonie ein optimistisch leuchtendes Stück in strahlendem C-Dur – dessen später hinzugefügter Titel die Kraft des Himmelsvaters und Lichtbringers Jupiter betont, der höchsten Gottheit der römischen Mythologie. Beethovens viertes Klavierkonzert, für dessen Interpretation wir die meisterhafte Pianistin Maria João Pires begrüßen, entstand 1806 ebenfalls in einer sorgenvollen Zeit: Die Qualen der Taubheit und die damit verbundene Vereinsamung machten ihm zunehmend zu schaffen – und er meinte einmal: »Musik ist das Klima meiner Seele.« Bei der Komposition des grandiosen Werkes soll er an den legendären Dichtermusiker Orpheus gedacht haben, der mit betörenden Klängen die finsteren Dämonen der Unterwelt bändigte.
