"The struggle of the individual against the crowd. The more evil society, the more evil the individual.” was a lifelong theme for Britten. With each turn, the noose tightens until another misfortune seals Grimes' fate. Britten's first major opera is an inexhaustible panorama of interpersonal entanglements, portrayed in the world of simple coastal dwellers whose fugues only hold together poorly. His music penetrates deep into the soul with its sounds for the lonely individual, the unleashed crowd and eternal nature. Stefan Herheim has been one of the most important opera directors of the present for around two decades. Always feeling from the point of view of the music, he interprets old and new works for our time in performances that are astonishing, visually powerful and exuberantly sensual. The often-described musicality of his performances is not surprising: Stefan Herheim began his career by studying the cello and made his way into opera with his own marionette theatre. Through his studies with Götz Friedrich he received the necessary tools. His long-time comrade-in-arms Alexander Meier-Dörzenbach, a polymath with a doctorate and international university experience, who was significantly involved as a dramaturge in practically all productions, provides much more than just the intellectual basis. Ring des Nibelungen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as with the costume designer Esther Bialas, who has previously worked on the productions of The Tales of Hoffmann and La Cenerentola . As conductor, Edward Gardner completes this management team for the first time. His expertise in musical theater - from London to New York - is equally rich, and his English heritage is just the icing on the cake that makes him the ideal advocate for Benjamin Britten as the most important British composer of the 20th century.
