One of the peaks of the world opera house, an amazing in depth and strength study of the psychological world of man, the opera by P.I. Tchaikovsky "The Queen of Spades" (1890) was created on the basis of the story of A.S. Pushkin (1833); at the same time, some details of the plot have been changed, but most importantly, other accents have been placed. Their meaning and purpose is to exacerbate the romantic conflicts "man - fate", "life - death", "love - game". Formally, the author of the libretto is listed as the composer's brother, Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky, but the invisible "director" was Pyotr Ilyich, who had an outstanding literary talent and dramatic flair. The main theme of the performance in the stage version of the director Yuri Alexandrov is the tragedy of the heroes, inextricably linked with the tragedy of the country. The fate of the three main characters, Herman, Lisa and the Countess, can be traced in the historical circumstances of the last century. The fourth, invisible hero is the royal family; her death became one of the prologues of russia's drama. The performance is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the House of Romanov. For directors, the difference in the concepts of Pushkin and the Tchaikovsky brothers was and remains a source of inspiration, an occasion to search for new solutions. Unlike the well-known Pushkinized versions (Vsevolod Meyerhold, Yuri Lyubimov, Lev Dodin), the fundamental attitude of Yuri Alexandrov was the preservation of both the musical text of P.I. Tchaikovsky and the very logic of action, the sequence of paintings.
