The opera (created as a “comic intermezzo”) “Pimpinone, or Unequal Marriage” by G. F. Telemann was first performed on September 27, 1725 in Hamburg between acts of G. F. Handel’s opera “Tamerlane”. The libretto by P. Paryati was originally intended for the Italian composer T. Albinoni. Librettist I. F. Pretorius made a German edition of it. The premiere was such a success that Pretorius and Telemann wrote a new opera with a continuation of the story - Vespetta's Cupid, or Galan in a Box.

The plot of “Pimpinone” anticipated “The Servant-Mistress” created a few years later by G.B. Pergolesi: the pretty maid Vespetta (translated from Italian as “little wasp”) seduces her master Pimpinone and marries him. After this, the old man in love, but unhappy in his marriage, has to endure the whims of his wife. Having taken possession of his house and wallet, Vespetta subjugates her husband.

In the 19th century, the opera Pimpinone, like other Telemann operas, was forgotten. The revival of interest in it began with a performance in 1929 in Telemann’s homeland - Magdeburg and the subsequent publication of the score in Mainz (1936). In the second half of the 20th century, the opera gained popularity in Germany and Austria in the interpretations of outstanding conductors (Helmut Koch, Helmut Rilling, Michael Schneider, etc.). Nowadays, Telemann's Pimpinone is one of the most popular operas of the Baroque repertoire. It is performed on the stages of many theaters in Europe and the USA: in Belgrade, Brandenburg, Mainz, Nuremberg, Turin, Boston, New York, etc.

The premiere of the opera “Pimpinone” at the Chamber Musical Theater took place on March 25, 1983. The founder of the theater, Boris Pokrovsky, invited his student, Estonian director Arne Mikk, to stage it. Its co-authors were conductor Vladimir Agronsky and set designer Yulia Aks. The opera was performed in Russian, translated by Irina Maslennikova. The performance was revived in 2009 under the direction of another Pokrovsky student, Valery Fedorenko.

The traditional and at the same time witty production, the rapid development of the plot of the short comic opera makes it one of the most popular in the theater’s repertoire. The performance is performed - now on the Bolshoi Chamber Stage - on the same evening as W. A. ​​Mozart’s opera “The Theater Director”.

Сюжет «Пимпиноне» предвосхищал созданную несколькими годами позже «Служанку-госпожу» Дж. Б. Перголези: симпатичная горничная Веспетта (в переводе с итальянского — «маленькая оса») обольщает своего хозяина Пимпиноне и выходит за него замуж. После этого влюблённому, но несчастному в браке старику приходится терпеть капризы жены. Завладев его домом и кошельком, Веспетта подчиняет себе мужа.

В XIX веке опера «Пимпиноне», как и другие оперы Телемана, была забыта. Возрождение интереса к ней началось с исполнения в 1929 году на родине Телемана — в Магдебурге и последовавшего за ним издания партитуры в Майнце (1936). Во второй половине XX века опера приобрела популярность в Германии и Австрии в интерпретациях выдающихся дирижеров (Хельмут Кох, Хельмут Риллинг, Михаэль Шнейдер и др.). В наше время «Пимпиноне» Телемана — одна из самых востребованных опер барочного репертуара. Она идёт на сценах множества театров Европы и США: в Белграде, Бранденбурге, Майнце, Нюрнберге, Турине, Бостоне, Нью-Йорке и др.

Премьера оперы «Пимпиноне» в Камерном музыкальном театре состоялась 25 марта 1983 года. Поставить её основатель театра Борис Покровский пригласил своего ученика, эстонского режиссёра Арне Микка. Его соавторами стали дирижёр Владимир Агронский и сценограф Юлия Акс. Опера шла на русском языке в переводе Ирины Масленниковой. Возобновление спектакля состоялось в 2009 году под руководством другого ученика Покровского — Валерия Федоренко.

Традиционная и вместе с тем остроумная постановка, стремительность развития сюжета короткой комической оперы делает её одной из самых востребованных в репертуаре театра. Спектакль идёт — теперь уже на Камерной сцене Большого — в один вечер с оперой В. А. Моцарта «Директор театра».
