Central work and culmination of Gershwin's musical journey, Porgy and Bess , America's first true opera, draws its roots in the language of black Americans in the South. Recreating music from fox-trot, ragtime, mambo or syncopated rhythms, Gershwin infuses his score with a tempo, a variety and a sequence of dramatic situations that had made the success of his musical comedies. In the slums of Charleston, Porgy tries to rescue Bess from her husband's clutches.
