«Майская ночь» — вторая из пятнадцати опер Николая Андреевича Римского-Корсакова. Либретто оперы композитор написал сам, стремясь сохранить не только ход гоголевского повествования, но и его красочный разговорный язык. Опираясь на текст Гоголя, Римский-Корсаков  построил  драматургию оперы — на сопоставлении реального и фантастического мира, связав их обрядовыми и игровыми хороводами. 

«Майская ночь» пронизана интонациями украинских и русских песен, эту оперу можно назвать оперой-песней.  В ней всё поёт — и герои и оркестр. В пении раскрываются характеры героев, а музыкальные портреты Свояченицы, Головы, Винокура, проникнутые гоголевским юмором, оттеняют лирический колорит оперы. Вся она напоена весенним поэтическим чувством, ароматом первой любви.

Первое представление «Майской ночи» состоялась 9 (21) января 1880 года на сцене Мариинского театра в Петербурге.

Here there is everything, that only may wish to opera composer − and the love of the young heroes, and comic situations, and the fantastic world of mermaids, and the reason for symphonic picturesque paintings − Ukrainian night...

“Identity, the original director’s decision of the play is that I marry in the formulation of two of the world − a real, live in the cossack women and men, residents of the village Dikanka, and the world of unreal − mermaids, Pannochki, stepmother.
I open Gogol's mysticism unequivocal. This is not the second, not the third plan, and a world of equal value, equal to the world of the real. Because the action takes place in week of the mermaid (cult of the water, the cult of women), all built on the ceremonialism. This is a cheerful opera."
