Das Geheimnis des sicheren Gewinns, war sich Fjodor Dostojewski sicher, sei überraschend simpel: „sich in jeder Minute ungeachtet aller Höhen und Tiefen des Spiels zu beherrschen und nicht in Leidenschaft zu geraten.“ Trotz dieses Wissens verspielte Dostojewski an den Roulette-Tischen deutscher Kurorte – woanders war Glücksspiel verboten – all sein Geld sowie das seiner Geliebten, was beide an den Rand der Verelendung brachte. Aus seinen Verlust-Erfahrungen schlug er dennoch Kapital: Mit dem unter Hochdruck verfassten Roman Der Spieler befreite er sich 1866 aus einem erpresserischen Verlagsvertrag. Und lieferte obendrein eine Studie seiner eigenen (Spiel-) Obsessionen. Ein halbes Jahrhundert später faszinierte den jungen Sergej Prokofjew das Panoptikum der entwurzelten Romanfiguren, die im fiktiven Roulettenburg im Bann des Glück verheißenden Rades festsitzen: ein verschuldeter General a.D. mit Heiratsplänen, eine Französin, die Vermögen bei ihm vermutet, ein Marquis, der dem General Geld vorstreckt, weil er scharf auf dessen Ziehtochter Polina ist – und auf die Erbschaft, die der General ungeduldig erwartet, bis die todkranke schwerreiche Verwandte mopsfidel am Spieltisch auftaucht. Jeder taktiert hier im Sinne der eigenen Interessen und des guten Ansehens. Nur der Hauslehrer Alexej hat weder Geld noch Ehren zu verlieren. Bis zur Besinnungslosigkeit in Polina vernarrt landet auch er am Spieltisch und badet für einen Moment im Gefühl, ganz oben zu sein. Axel Ranisch, der an der Staatsoper bereits Die Liebe zu drei Orangen und Hänsel und Gretel fantasie- und liebevoll ins Heute transportiert hat, wird die Stuttgarter Erstaufführung von Prokofjews bitter-satirischer Oper inszenieren: Roulettenburg als letzten Zufluchtsort einer internationalen Haute Volée, die trotz ihres Hauptgewinns – nämlich einer Katastrophe gerade so entgangen zu sein – immer noch glaubt, dass nur zählt, wer mühelos das große Geld macht.

Nevertheless, he capitalized on his experiences of loss: in 1866, he freed himself from an extortionate publishing contract with the novel The Gambler, which he wrote under great pressure. And on top of that, he delivered a study of his own (gambling) obsessions. Half a century later, the young Sergei Prokofiev was fascinated by the panopticon of uprooted characters from the novel, who are stuck in the fictional Roulettenburg under the spell of the wheel that promises happiness: a retired general in debt with plans to get married. with plans to marry, a French woman who suspects he has a fortune, a marquis who advances money to the general because he is keen on his foster daughter Polina - and on the inheritance that the general impatiently awaits until the terminally ill, extremely wealthy relative turns up at the gambling table looking pug-faced. Everyone is acting in their own interests and for the sake of their own reputation. Only the tutor Alexei has neither money nor honor to lose. Infatuated with Polina to the point of insanity, he also ends up at the gambling table and bathes for a moment in the feeling of being on top. Axel Ranisch, who has already imaginatively and lovingly transported The Love for Three Oranges and Hansel and Gretel into the present day at the State Opera, will direct the Stuttgart premiere of Prokofiev's bitterly satirical opera: Roulettenburg as the last refuge of an international haute volée who, despite their main gain - namely having barely escaped a catastrophe - still believe that only those who effortlessly make the big bucks count.
