On February 1, 1896, when Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème premiered at the Teatro Regio in Turin under Arturo Toscanini, the critics' verdict was scathing. The material, taken from the outermost fringes of society, was considered outrageous and was clothed in music that would "leave no significant trace in the history of opera". The plot's closeness to life was probably too direct and unsparing. The possibility of a little happiness for those social outsiders around Rodolfo and Mimi and for their great and tragic love, which together with Puccini's immortal music still exerts an unbroken fascination today, seemed too distant. Director Magdalena Fuchsberger, together with costume designer Julia Rösler and set designer Valentin Köhler, takes a look at those individuals in the new production of La Bohème looks at those individuals who cannot find their way in a rapidly and irreversibly changing society. The team sees the work as a timeless Production about social warmth and the power of dreaming against a backdrop of exclusion and alienation.
