“The wealth and maturity of this boy are unbelievable.” Leonard Bernstein once bowed to Bejun Mehta with these astonished words after hearing recordings on which the 15-year-old boy Mehta had also sung songs by Schubert and Brahms. Today, Mehta is one of the world's most celebrated countertenors, especially in the baroque repertoire. However, he has retained his love for art songs. With his longtime piano partner Jonathan Ware, he now spans the arc from the 17th to the 20th century, from Orpheus Britannicus Henry Purcell to the modern English Orpheus Britten. And Beethoven's "An die ferne Geliebte", which is the first song cycle in music history, is followed by a Shakespeare setting by Joseph Haydn, who was revered in England as the "Shakespeare of music".
