As a disfigured outsider, Rigoletto cynically and ruthlessly mocks the victims of the amorous lust of his employer, the duke. When his own daughter Gilda falls in love with the duke, Rigoletto loses the ground under his feet completely. With the help of the assassin Sparafucile, he wants to finally put a stop to the Duke's handiwork - with tragic consequences! Together with the "Trovatore" and the "Traviata" (both 1853), "Rigoletto" belongs to the so-called "Trilogia popolare", which marks the beginning of the maturing period of Verdi's great music dramas. After the early Shakespearean opera "Macbeth", it is the "Rigoletto" in particular that "achieves the desired solution to Verdi's operatic problem: the acquisition of a new artistic language based on tradition, in a way that is as concise as it is economical" (Ulrich Schreiber) . The material is based on Victor Hugo's play "Le roi s'amuse" (1832), which Verdi praised as "perhaps the greatest drama of modern times". "Triboulet", it is said of the counterpart to the character Rigoletto in the play, "is worthy of an invention by Shakespeare!" After his acclaimed staging of Rossini's "Barber of Seville" in the 2017/18 season, artistic director Markus Trabusch has returned to directing the opera. With "Rigoletto" he continues his preoccupation with the work of Verdi, which he began in 2011 with "La traviata" in Augsburg.
