By the mid-19th century, French audiences loved pompous operas with grand ballet performances, and even better with luxurious sets and bombastic effects. Meyerbeer spearheaded this demanding genre with  Robert the Devil , which became so popular that it even rivaled the works of Gioacchino Rossini. Chopin himself called it " a masterpiece where devils sing on trumpets and the dead rise from their graves ". The opera could be called a legend about the desire for love, honor, power and immortality, personified by a medieval knight. However, his "Faustian" story full of devilish seductions is carried in the spirit of traditional French:  Wine, games and beauties, these are our only loves!

Francouzské publikum do poloviny 19. století milovalo pompézní opery s velkými baletními výstupy a ještě lépe s luxusní výpravou a bombastickými efekty. Meyerbeer stanul v čele tohoto náročného žánru uvedením Roberta ďábla, který se stal natolik populárním, že dokonce konkuroval dílům Gioacchina Rossiniho. Samotný Chopin ho nazval jako „mistrovský kus, kde ďáblové zpívají na hlásné trouby a mrtví vstávají z hrobů“. Opera by se dala nazvat legendou o touze po lásce, cti, moci a nesmrtelnosti, kterou zosobňuje středověký rytíř. Jeho „faustovský“ příběh plný ďábelských svodů se ovšem nese v duchu tradičně francouzském: Víno, hra a krásky, to jsou naše jediné lásky!
