Even during Franz Schubert's lifetime, small concerts were established in the salons of the up-and-coming bourgeoisie. At these »Schubertiads«, as they were called by the composer’s circle of friends and which were regularly held until his death in 1828, people met in alternating groups, played his works and read poetry. In addition to chamber music and solo songs, choral music was also heard at that time, which is almost completely forgotten today. At the same time, it has everything that we love so much about Schubert's music: voluptuous vocal movements, rich colors in the accompanying instruments and, of course, romantic enthusiasm.
With its »Schubertiade«, the Cologne Bach Society would like to take a stand for the rich and yet so underestimated choral work of the Viennese. The Cologne Museum of Applied Arts is the exclusive venue for this rewarding tour of discovery with solo songs and songs for women, men and mixed choirs.

Schon zu Lebzeiten Franz Schuberts hatten sich kleine Konzerte in Salons des aufstrebenden Bürgertums etabliert. Zu diesen »Schubertiaden«, wie sie vom Freundeskreis des Komponisten genannt und bis zu dessen Tod 1828 regelmäßig durchgeführt wurden, traf man sich in wechselnder Runde, musizierte seine Werke und trug Dichtung vor. Neben Kammermusik und Sololiedern kam damals auch Chormusik zu Gehör, die heute fast völlig vergessen ist. Dabei hält sie all das bereit, was wir auch sonst an Schuberts Musik so lieben: schwelgerische Vokalsätze, Farbenreichtum im begleitenden Instrumentarium und natürlich romantische Schwärmereien.
Mit seiner »Schubertiade« möchte der Bach-Verein Köln u.a. eine Lanze brechen für das reiche und doch so unterschätzte Chorschaffen des Wieners. Exklusiver Veranstaltungsort dieser lohnenden Entdeckungstour mit Sololiedern sowie Gesängen für Frauen-, Männer- und gemischten Chor ist das Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln.
