A powerful selection of works by Robert Carver, Scotland’s leading 16th century composer, alongside music from his English contemporaries, and James MacMillan.
In a special curation for Kings Place’s Scotland Unwrapped series, we focus on the music of Robert Carver, considered to be the greatest Scottish composer of the 16th century. Carver created highly intricate works of polyphony, masses and motets in a High Renaissance style. The massive, granite-like choral writing of his magnificent 19-part motet O Bone Jesu, written for James IV King of Scots, proved an inspiration to James MacMillan who chose to clothe the same text in his own musical language of reflective beauty.
