He was crowned musical messiah by Robert Schumann at the age of only twenty, but Brahms himself preferred to reflect on the human in art. In 1868 he wrote his great "musical beatitude of the mourners". The religious freethinker composed the work during a phase of strong doubts about the church as an institution. The result is not funeral music, but a work to comfort the living, which raises the perennial question of the relationship between transience and eternity.

After performances in Geneva, Bergamo and Aix-en-Provence, the deeply moving work can now finally be heard at the Stadtcasino Basel with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Radio Choir and under the direction of Marek Janowski.
