A-cappella – Chor pur. So eröffnen wir die neue Saison. Das Stück, das wir ihnen im Rahmen des Musikfests Berlin präsentieren: Sergei Rachmaninoffs „Ganznächtliche Vigil“. Der Geburtstag des berühmten russischen Komponisten und Pianisten, der 1917 vor der Oktoberrevolution floh und nie wieder in sein Heimatland zurückkehren sollte, jährt sich 2023 zum 150. Mal. Die „Ganznächtliche Vigil“ von 1915 gilt als Paradestück der Renaissance der russisch-orthodoxen Kirchenmusik um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert. Der Rückgriff auf Traditionen, der sich darin zeigt, regt nicht nur vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen politischen Situation zum Nachdenken und zur Auseinandersetzung an. Auch wenn Rachmaninoff sich mit der „Ganznächtlichen Vigil“ an die Konventionen hält, so ist hier längst nicht alles so organisch gewachsen und über Jahrhunderte etabliert, wie es scheint. Denn er nimmt sich zwar die alten Lieder, Texte und Melodien, legt diese überlieferten Formen aber recht kreativ aus, schreibt neue Passagen hinzu und ergänzt Althergebrachtes mit Eigenem auf derart subtile Art und Weise, dass es kaum auffällt. Tradition, so zeigt sich hier erneut, ist stets auch Erfindung, und das Weitertragen des Gegebenen bedeutet immer auch dessen Veränderung. Jedes Mal haben wir es dabei selbst in der Hand, was wir mitnehmen und neu auslegen – und wie wir uns dazu verhalten. The work we’ll be presenting as part of the Musikfest Berlin is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil”. 2023 is the 150th anniversary of the famous Russian composer and pianist’s birth; he fled the October Revolution in 1917 and was never to return to his homeland. The “All-Night Vigil” from 1915 is regarded as the showpiece of the renaissance of Russian Orthodox church music at the turn of the 20th century. His recourse to traditions is thought-provoking and will spark dialogue, and that not just against the backdrop of the current political situation. Even if Rachmaninoff conforms to conventions with the “All-Night Vigil”, not everything here has grown organically and been established over the course of centuries as it may seem. Thus, he does take up the old songs, texts and melodies, but interprets these traditional forms quite creatively, adding new passages and supplementing the traditional with his own music so subtly that it is hardly noticeable. Tradition, as can be seen here again, is always also invention, and carrying on what is given always also means changing it. It’s in our hands each time what we take along and interpret anew—and how we conduct ourselves.
