PRESENTATION
The last work of Pergolese, who died in the prime of his life, his Stabat Mater was immediately popular. Airs and duets alternate in a concertante writing that wonderfully creates a dialogue between the voices of the Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine and the instrumental ensemble. This sacred score has a theatrical dimension typical of the Baroque era and the nascent opera. Pergolesi sets to music the love of a mother for her son, a profoundly human universal affect, with very expressive musical figures. This musical representation of the passions was nicknamed the painting of the ear.
