Antonio Vivaldi's career as a composer of sacred music did not begin in Venice, but in 1712 in the city of Brescia, with the famous "Stabat mater" commissioned by the Confederazione dell'oratorio di San Filippo Neri, who was based there. This sounds in the midst of a program of works by the "Red Priest" and by Antonio Caldara, among others, with whom he shared the decisive stations of his life, the place of birth and the place of death. In our program, which the musicians* of Rinaldo Alessandrini's Concerto Italiano will perform together with the Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland, the motet "Longe mala umbrae terrores" will also be heard, a spectacular work that brings the dramatic language of opera into the Worship Worship. It was probably composed by Vivaldi for a castrato for the feast of Saint Lawrence and shows the astonishing way in which the sacred and profane areas had converged in Italian-language vocal music of the 1720s to 1730s.

Die Karriere von Antonio Vivaldi als Komponist geistlicher Musik begann nicht in Venedig, sondern 1712 in der Stadt Brescia, mit dem berühmten «Stabat mater», als Auftragswerk der dort ansässigen Confederazione dell’oratorio di San Filippo Neri. Dieses erklingt inmitten eines Programms von Werken des «Roten Priesters» sowie u. a. von Antonio Caldara, mit dem er die entscheidenden Stationen seines Lebens, den Geburts- als auch den Sterbeort, teilte. Der erhabene Gesang von Liebe, Schmerz und Frömmigkeit, gestützt von einer äußerst sparsamen Orchestrierung von atemberaubender Intensität und miteinander wechselnden langsamen wie gemäßigten Tempi, die eine düstere von f- bis c-Moll reichende Welt durchqueren, rührte die Menschen von einst zu vermutlich ebenso vielen Tränen wie sie in der vielvertonten Sequenz zum Fest der «Septem Dolorum Beatae Mariae Virginis» die Mutter Gottes auf Golgatha vergoss.

In unserem Programm, das die Musiker*innen von Rinaldo Alessandrinis Concerto Italiano gemeinsam mit der norwegischen Mezzosopranistin Marianne Beate Kielland zum Besten geben werden, erklingt auch die Motette «Longe mala umbrae terrores», ein spektakuläres Werk, das die dramatische Sprache der Oper in den Gottesdienst trug. Es wurde von Vivaldi zum Fest des Heiligen Laurentius wahrscheinlich für einen Kastraten komponiert und zeigt, auf welch erstaunliche Weise sich in der italienischsprachigen Vokalmusik der 1720er- bis 30er-Jahre die sakralen und profanen Bereiche einander angenähert hatten.
