Piano Variations on Jesus Christ Superstar is the title of the new album by Stefano Bollani. 
Stefano Bollani’s solo album PIANO VARIATIONS ON JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, entirely produced by Bollani, will be internationally released on 3rd April 2020, that is 50 years after Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice’s original concept album.

Bollani, grateful for the exceptional permission granted to him to re-interpret the cult opera, has freely but respectfully approached and improvised on the original songs by following his own playful wit, informed by the musical traditions, genres, styles and encounters that have influenced him and shaped what is considered his very own idiom. For his version of Jesus Christ Superstar Stefano Bollani wanted a warm, mellow, profound, dense and clear piano sound that could best vehicle the profound and archaic emotions and extreme unanswered questions raised by the original work. Hence the piano tuned at 432 Hz, which has allowed him to express the warmth and profundity of Lloyd Webber & Rice’s strong and round film characters.

Le pianiste et compositeur italien Stefano Bollani continue de nous étonner. Cette fois, il nous propose sa propre version du Jesus Christ Superstar de Andrew Lloyd Weber, cinquante ans après la parution de l’album original. Ne vous attendez pas à une interprétation purement instrumentale de l’opéra-rock. Au contraire, Bollani est ici au sommet de son art : il aborde à sa manière personnelle et libre les mélodies et les chants célèbres du chef d’œuvre de Lloyd Weber et les irrigue des nombreuses traditions musicales, des genres et des styles qu’il a rencontrés au fil d’une carrière de trente ans, particulièrement riche et variée.

De Italiaanse pianist-componist Stefano Bollani blijft verbazen. Deze keer stelt hij zijn eigen versie voor van Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, precies vijftig jaar nadat het originele album uitkwam. Verwacht je niet aan een louter instrumentale uitvoering van de originele rock-opera. Integendeel, we horen Bollani hier op zijn best : op zijn eigen typische vrije manier benadert hij de bekende melodieën en songs van Lloyd Webbers meesterwerk, waarbij hij ze onderdompelt in de vele muzikale tradities, genres en stijlen die hij in voorbije dertig jaar tegenkwam tijdens zijn rijke en veelzijdige carrière.

Italian pianist-composer Stefano Bollani never ceases to amaze. This time he presents his own version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar, exactly fifty years after the original album came out. Do not expect a purely instrumental performance of the original rock opera. On the contrary, here we hear Bollani at his best: in his own typically free way, he approaches the well-known melodies and songs of Lloyd Webber's masterpiece, immersing them in the many musical traditions, genres and styles he has encountered over the past thirty years during his rich and varied career.
