We continue our series of STRONG WOMEN this season with Pauline Viardot-García. She was one of the most fascinating and influential artistic personalities of the 19th century. Clara Schumann described her as "the most brilliant woman I have ever met". As a singer, pianist, composer, teacher and muse, she was able to significantly shape the European culture of an entire era.

Born 200 years ago as the daughter of the Spanish tenor Manuel García, she was initially trained as a pianist by Franz Liszt. As an opera singer, her London debut in 1839 marked the beginning of one of the most impressive operatic careers of her time. While she celebrated triumphant success on the stages in Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain and Russia, her musical salons in Paris and Baden-Baden became a social event as a meeting place for musicians, poets, painters and princes.
