Öntvény

Dark farce, “deep black operetta” and grotesque horror spectacle from New York's Broadway: Sondheim's musical thriller Sweeney Todd impresses not only with its opulent, almost operatic, thoroughly composed score, but also with musical quotes from horror films such as Hitchcock's Psycho . Hugh Wheeler's text book criticizes the abuse of power by a decadent and maliciously scheming upper class, but also celebrates the monstrous fantasies of revenge of the tormented protagonist Sweeney Todd. Benjamin Barker returns to Victorian London after fifteen years of unlawful exile. He learns that the powerful judge Turpin initiated his deportation to a penal colony in order to seduce his wife Lucy. Benjamin opens a barber shop under the name Sweeney Todd on Fleet Street. There he is just waiting for the right moment to take revenge on Turpin, who destroyed his life. His razor becomes a weapon for his murderous vengeance campaign. The more customers disappear into Sweeney's shop, the more Mrs. Lovett's once ruinous pie business gets up and running again - after all, Sweeney's victims are also suitable for further processing ... The Dutch director and theater director Theu Boermans is not only known for his touching drama productions, his cinema and television films have already won awards at international film festivals. The monumental World War I musical The Soldier of Orange , spectacularly staged in a disused airport hangar, has achieved cult status in the Netherlands. Now Boermans is bringing a celebrated Broadway classic to the stage of the opera house with Sondheim's diabolical barber from Fleet Street.
