Admirateur de La Flûte enchantée, Schumann aurait aimé devenir un grand compositeur d’opéras. Après l’échec de Genoveva, ce passionné de lied ne renonce pas à son dessein, et s’attache, comme Berlioz, Liszt, Gounod ou Busoni, à donner sa version du drame de Goethe, qui dit tout de notre destinée humaine. Schumann focalise l’action sur le thème de la rédemption décliné en trois personnages, les barytons Faust, son double maléfique Méphistophélès, et son autre double racheté, le Doctor Marianus. Offert à son épouse Clara, cet oratorio en 13 scènes, sublime et inclassable, surprend par sa dimension symbolique, son mysticisme, ses choeurs magnifiques et son inventivité orchestrale.
