On the menu, spontaneity, improvisation, lightness for this small group of Arts Flo musicians that William Christie, in an interview for France Musique , compares to a Duke Ellington orchestra in 1929: “Every night will be different. There is a framework, we decide who will play where and with whom, but nothing is written. […] In that sense, we are getting closer to the way opera was given at the time of its premiere in 1728.” William Christie And at their side “the actors sing, dance, jump and take obvious pleasure in playing this comedy that is not in lace. [...] Bloody good! commented Philippe Venturini in Les Echos . Although cited in all the histories of music as the most characteristic example, with Dido and Aeneas , of the contribution of the English to the field of opera, the Beggar's Opera ("The Beggar's Opera") rarely remains mounted. This is also the very first time that Les Arts Florissants have approached this extraordinary work, which some consider to be the ancestor of the musical. More than an opera strictly speaking, it is a "ballad-opera", a form of play interspersed with popular songs and scholarly airs compiled by the composer of the overture, Pepusch, and whose some have been attributed to Purcell or Handel. This staged show will be an opportunity to rediscover the satirical flavor of John Gay's libretto, at the same time as the talent of improvisers and arrangers of the musicians of Les Arts Florissants . who harmonized the entire score themselves. It will also allow William Christie and director Robert Carsen to continue their long-standing collaboration, after the success of productions such as Alcina , Armide and Les Fêtes vénitiennes .
