Mr. Mushnik's flower shop is past its prime. Only when his uptight employee Seymour Krelbourn mysteriously discovers a new type of plant does business flourish again and customers flock to the store. He calls the exotic plant "Audrey Zwo", after his pretty but not too smart colleague with whom he is secretly in love. She has long been involved in a relationship with the brutal dentist Orin, whom Seymour apparently cannot hold a candle to. The shop is now flourishing, but this success has its price, because the plant is not satisfied with water and fertilizer, but demands human blood. Seymour quickly gets overwhelmed by the whole thing, because the initially small potted plant quickly turns into a gluttonous monster,

Der Blumenladen von Mr. Mushnik hat seine besten Jahre hinter sich. Erst als sein verklemmter Angestellter Seymour Krelbourn unter mysteriösen Umständen eine neuartige Pflanze entdeckt, blüht das Geschäft wieder auf und die Kunden strömen in den Laden. Das exotische Gewächs nennt er „Audrey Zwo“, nach seiner hübschen, aber nicht allzu schlauen Kollegin, in welche er heimlich verliebt ist. Diese hat sich bereits seit Längerem auf eine Beziehung mit dem brutalen Zahnarzt Orin eingelassen, dem Seymour nur augenscheinlich nicht das Wasser reichen kann. Der Laden floriert nun zwar, doch dieser Erfolg hat seinen Preis, denn die Pflanze gibt sich nicht mit Wasser und Dünger zufrieden, sondern verlangt menschliches Blut. Schnell wächst Seymour die ganze Sache über den Kopf, denn aus der anfänglich kleinen Topfpflanze wird rasch ein gefräßiges Ungetüm, das bald sein erstes Opfer fordert …
