Death and resurrection, darkness and light, grief and life: these are the themes that George Frideric Handel dealt with in his oratorio on the resurrection written in Rome in 1708. Angels and devils measure their strength while Mary Magdalene, Mary Cleophas and the disciple John mourn at Jesus' tomb. Human emotions, the experience of being at the mercy and the creation of new hope are central to Handel's dramatic and musical design. Highest virtuosity contrasts with lyrical singing, exhilarating rhythms meet meditative passages and make all kinds of human emotions tangible. As with the previous work »Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno«, Handel also creates his very own genre between oratorio and opera with »La Resurrezione«, between drama and contemplation. In the hands of director Calixto Bieito (»Marienvesper«, »Jakob Lenz«) it becomes an evening of theater full of contrasts, impressive images and enchanting beauty.

Tod und Auferstehung, Finsternis und Licht, Trauer und Leben: Das sind die Themen, mit denen sich Georg Friedrich Händel in seinem 1708 in Rom entstandenen Auferstehungs-Oratorium auseinandersetzt. Engel und Teufel messen ihre Kräfte, während Maria Magdalena, Maria Kleophas und der Jünger Johannes an Jesu Grab trauern. Menschliche Emotionen, das Erleben von Ausgeliefertsein und das Schöpfen neuer Hoffnung, sind dabei für Händels dramatisch-musikalische Ausgestaltung zentral. Höchste Virtuosität steht lyrischem Gesang gegenüber aufrauschende Rhythmen treffen auf meditative Passagen und machen menschliches Fühlen in all seinen Spielarten erlebbar. Ähnlich wie mit dem Vorgängerwerk »Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno« erschafft Händel auch  mit »La Resurrezione« sein ganz eigenes Genre zwischen Oratorium und Oper, zwischen Dramatik und Kontemplation. In den Händen von Regisseur Calixto Bieito (»Marienvesper«, »Jakob Lenz«) wird daraus ein Theaterabend voller Kontraste, eindrücklicher Bilder und berückender Schönheit.
