Die erste «Drehung der Schraube» – so die wörtliche Übersetzung von The Turn of the Screw – beginnt recht harmlos: Eine junge Gouvernante übernimmt in einem englischen Landhaus die Er­ziehung von Flora und Miles, zwei Waisenkindern. Aber schon bald sorgen ein Brief aus Miles’ Schule und eine nächtliche Erscheinung für Irri­tationen. Durch die Haushälterin erfährt die Gouvernante, dass sie wohl den verstorbenen Kammerdiener Peter Quint gesehen habe, der einst in einer engen Beziehung zu Miles stand. Sollte der tote Wiedergänger Quint tatsächlich zurückgekehrt sein, um den Jungen in seinen Be­­sitz zu bringen? Immer mehr gerät das Weltbild der jungen Gouvernante ins Wanken, er­schei­­­nen die Geheimnisse der Vergangenheit grösser und dunkler...
Benjamin Brittens vielschichtige Kammeroper aus dem Jahre 1954 nach einem Roman von Henry James ist ein Meisterwerk. In der Premieren-Serie 2014/15 ebenso wie in der Wie­deraufnahme-Serie in der Saison 2015/16 singt die kanadische Sopranistin Layla Claire die Partie der Gouvernante, Pavol Breslik gibt den Peter Quint.

Bei der Premiere im November 2014 wurde die Inszenierung begeistert aufgenommen und die Presse war voll des Lobes: Ein «grossartiges Stück, vielschichtig packend umgesetzt» heisst es da etwa, oder: «The turn of the screw ist faszinierend in allen Aspekten und restlos begeisternd». The turn of the screw
The first "turning of the screw" - the literal translation of The Turn of the Screw - begins quite harmlessly: A young governess takes over the education of Flora and Miles, two orphans, in an English country house. But soon a letter from Miles' school and a nocturnal apparition cause irritation. The governess learns from the housekeeper that she must have seen the deceased valet Peter Quint, who once had a close relationship with Miles. Could the dead revenant Quint really have returned to claim the boy? The worldview of the young governess begins to falter, the mysteries of the past seem bigger and darker...
Benjamin Britten's complex 1954 chamber opera, based on a novel by Henry James, is a masterpiece. In the 2014/15 premiere series and in the 2015/16 season revival series, the Canadian soprano Layla Claire sings the role of the governess, while Pavol Breslik sings the role of Peter Quint.

At the premiere in November 2014, the production was enthusiastically received and the press was full of praise: A "great play, implemented in a multi-layered gripping way" it says, or: "The turn of the screw is fascinating in all aspects and completely inspiring". .
