Subscription of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic “Classics. New" is the entry point into the world of academic music, and at the same time a gift to all connoisseurs of works of the 20th and 21st centuries. The four concerts of the subscription are a route through time and musical styles, an acquaintance (or a new meeting) with the masterpieces of the great classics. A reliable companion on this journey will be Yaroslav Timofeev, one of the brightest and most sought-after Russian musicologists of the new generation, who has the talent to talk about music brightly and interestingly, deeply and succinctly.

One of the main musical capitals of the world, Venice, to which we owe the rapid development of opera, the emergence of the baroque concert genre itself and much more, did not lose its importance for the musical world in the 20th century: one of the largest avant-garde composers, Luigi Nono, lived and worked here. In 2024, the world celebrates the centenary of his birth. Nono's music will be performed in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic along with the masterpieces of Venetian composers of the Baroque era - the works of Tomaso Albinoni and the famous cycle of concerts "The Four Seasons" by Vivaldi. 

Luigi Nono became one of the central figures of the famous Darmstadt courses in the early years of their existence: the most important center for the exchange of experience in the field of radical musical practices, which still exists today, played a leading role in the development of music in the second half of the 20th century. It was Nono who coined the term “Darmstadt School”: this is how he described the music created in the 1950s by himself, as well as by such major avant-garde artists as Pierre Boulez, Bruno Maderna, Karlheinz Stockhausen. The composer compared the importance of the school with the role of the Bauhaus movement in fine arts and architecture.

“Epitaph 2 by Federico García Lorca” is Nono’s early work; its premiere took place in Darmstadt. One of three epitaphs dedicated to Lorca, it does not contain a vocal part, but is preceded by a title from the poem “Funeral Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías” - the famous bullfighter, friend of the poet, who died after being wounded in the arena: “Y su sangre ya viene cantando” - “ His blood flows like a song.” Nono recreates the atmosphere of the text in sounds, using a solo flute and entrusting extended solo fragments to other orchestral instruments.

Одна из главных музыкальных столиц мира, Венеция, которой мы обязаны бурному развитию оперы, возникновению самого жанра барочного концерта и многому другому, не утратила значения для музыкального мира и в XX веке: здесь жил и работал один из крупнейших композиторов-авангардистов Луиджи Ноно. В 2024 году мир отмечает столетие со дня его рождения. Музыка Ноно прозвучит в Большом зале филармонии наряду с шедеврами венецианских композиторов эпохи барокко – сочинениями Томазо Альбинони и знаменитым циклом  концертов «Времена года» Вивальди. 

Луиджи Ноно стал одной из центральных фигур знаменитых Дармштадтской курсов в первые годы их существования: важнейший центр обмена опытом в области радикальных музыкальных практик, существующий и сегодня, сыграл ведущую роль в развитии музыки второй половины XX века. Именно Ноно принадлежит сам термин «Дармштадтская школа»: так он описал музыку, созданную в 1950-е годы им самим, а также такими крупнейшими авангардистами, как Пьер Булез, Бруно Мадерна, Карлхайнц Штокхаузен. Композитор сравнивал значение школы с ролью течения Баухаус в изобразительном искусстве и архитектуре.

«Эпитафия 2 Федерико Гарсиа Лорке» – раннее сочинений Ноно, его премьера состоялась как раз в Дармштадте. Одна из трех эпитафий, посвященных Лорке, она не содержит вокальной партии, зато предваряется заголовком из стихотворения «Погребальный плач по Игнасио Санчесу Мехиасу» – знаменитому тореадору, другу поэта, погибшему после ранения на арене: «Y su sangre ya viene cantando» – «Льется кровь его, как песня». Ноно воссоздает в звуках атмосферу текста, используя солирующую флейту и поручая развернутые сольные фрагменты другим оркестровым инструментам.
