The 2022-2023 season ends on a jazz rhythm, with this concert around Gershwin. This child from Brooklyn, born into a family of Jews who emigrated from Russia, built bridges between 20th century music , from rhapsody to musical comedy. It is from a playful vacation in Havana that Gershwin derives his Cuban Overture , sometimes titled only Rumba . Maracas, bongos, claves…: the percussions have a field day in this piece full of rhythms and lightness, where the blues peaks in the very elaborate melody. Thomas Enhco, renowned jazz pianist and violinist, joins the orchestra conducted by Giuseppe Grazioli for the Concerto in Ffor piano and orchestra (1925). Admired by Stravinsky, the work baffled the critics, who did not know how to classify it between jazz and classical music. Charleston, blues, rhythmic rondo: all the American youth of the Roaring Twenties can be heard in this score that is both free and formal. Thomas Enhco remains in the spotlight for Rhapsody in blue , one of Gershwin's most performed works. The regular rhythm of a train to Boston, an improvisation on the piano in a New York evening…: everything is music with Gershwin, who feeds on modern and urban life. The evening ends with a detour to France with the sequel to An American in Paris .. During his trip to France in the spring of 1926, the composer met Stravinsky, Poulenc, Milhaud. On his return to the United States, he composed this work, which would turn into a musical in Hollywood in the 1950s.

La saison 2022-2023 s’achève sur un rythme de jazz, avec ce concert autour de Gershwin. Cet enfant de Brooklyn, né dans une famille de Juifs émigrés de Russie, a jeté des ponts entre les musiques du XXème siècle, de la rhapsodie à la comédie musicale. C’est de vacances enjouées à La Havane que Gershwin tire son Ouverture cubaine, parfois intitulée seulement Rumba. Maracas, bongos, claves…: les percussions s’en donnent à cœur joie dans cette pièce tout en rythmes et en légèreté, où le blues pointe dans la mélodie très travaillée. Thomas Enhco, pianiste et violoniste de jazz reconnu, rejoint l’orchestre dirigé par Giuseppe Grazioli pour le Concerto en fa pour piano et orchestre (1925). Admirée par Stravinski, l’œuvre dérouta la critique, qui ne sut pas la classer entre jazz et musique classique. Charleston, blues, rondo rythmique : toute la jeunesse américaine des années folles s’entend dans cette partition à la fois libre et formelle. Thomas Enhco reste à l’honneur pour la Rhapsody in blue, l’une des œuvres les plus jouées de Gershwin. Le rythme régulier d’un train pour Boston, une improvisation au piano dans une soirée new-yorkaise…: tout est musique chez Gershwin, qui se nourrit de la vie moderne et urbaine. C’est par un détour en France que se termine la soirée avec la suite d’Un Américain à Paris. Lors de son voyage en France au printemps 1926, le compositeur rencontre Stravinski, Poulenc, Milhaud. À son retour aux États-Unis, il compose cette œuvre, qui se transformera en comédie musicale à Hollywood dans les années 50.
