Le Second Concerto pour piano et orchestre de Brahms de 1891 révolutionna le genre par sa taille et son envergure. En quatre mouvements au lieu des trois habituels, il s’ouvre de façon originale : par un noble appel de cor, auquel répond le piano, qui s’engage ensuite dans une cadence d’humeur changeante. Le second mouvement est un Scherzo passionné, suivi d’un Andante dont le matériau thématique repose sur le chant initial du violoncelle solo. Le rondo final associe espièglerie et grandeur.
Le Don Quichotte de Strauss, de 1897, est un « Thème et variations » à programme. Son argument repose sur le célèbre roman de Cervantès : un vieil hidalgo devenu fou, s’imagine chevalier errant et part à l’aventure. Le violoncelle personnifiant Don Quichotte, et l’alto Sancho Panza, la partition colorée de Strauss dépeint avec brio des événements tels que la confusion d’un troupeau de moutons avec une armée ennemie. Sa folie dissipée, le gentleman fatigué meurt paisiblement sur un glissando descendant.

When Brahms composed his Second Piano Concerto in 1881, it set a new benchmark for size and scope. Scored in four movements rather than the usual three, its opening is strikingly original: a noble horn call, answered by the piano, which then launches into a mood-switching cadenza. The second movement is an impassioned scherzo, followed by an Andante whose music is based on its initial solo cello song, and a rondo finale blending playfulness with grandeur. Strauss’s Don Quixotte of 1897 is a programmatic theme and variations on the famed Cervantes novel about an elderly hidalgo who goes mad, imagines himself to be a knight errant, and sets off on adventure. Casting a cello as ‘Don Quixotte’ and a viola as his servant, Sancho Panza, Strauss’s colourful score brilliantly depicts events such as the mistaking of a flock of sheep for an enemy army (atonal baa-ing). Eventually sanity is restored, and the weary gentleman dies peacefully on a downwards glissando.
