At least three of Jules Massenet's (1842 - 1912) numerous operas are still owned by opera houses around the world and all three were based on extremely valuable literary models. Manon (1884), Werther (1892) and Don Quixote (1910). Many consider Werther to be the most psychologically convincing of them all.

Werther kisses Lotta, but respects her marriage: Lotta loves Werther, but redeems the obligation and marries Albert. Both behavior will, of course, lead to a tragic outcome.
In the first act, love will break out between Lotte and Werther and the obstacles that stand in the way of that love will be hinted at. In the second act, Lotta is already married to Albert and respects her marital obligation despite the evidence of Werther's sufferings. In the third act, the conflict between suppressed and unrealized love on the one hand and duty on the other culminates with the introduction of firearms, which may not extinguish love, but will at least reduce suffering. But only Werther's. Because in the fourth act (picture) a distraught Lotta remains with Werther in her arms. That she too will not follow him to death is perhaps hinted at only by the children's singing of a holiday song coming from a distance...

Barem su tri od brojnih opera Julesa Masseneta (1842 - 1912) još uvijek svojinom opernih kuća širom svijeta i sve tri su nastale na iznimno vrijednim literarnim predlošcima. Manon (1884), Werther (1892) i Don Quijote (1910). Upravo Werthera mnogi smatraju psihološki najuvjerljivijom od njih.

Werther ljubi Lottu, ali poštuje njezin brak: Lotta voli Werthera, ali iskupljuje obavezu i udaje se za Alberta. I jedno i drugo ponašanje urodit će, naravno, tragičnim ishodom.
U prvom činu između Lotte i Werthera buknut će ljubav i bit će nagoviještene prepreke koje stoje pred tom ljubavlju. U drugome činu Lotta je već udata za Alberta i poštuje svoju bračnu obavezu unatoč bjelodanosti Wertherovih patnji. U trećemu činu sukob zatomljene i neralizirane ljubavi s jedne i dužnosti s druge strane kulminira uvođenjem vatrenog oružja, koje možda neće ugasiti ljubav, ali će zato barem prikratiti patnje. No, samo Wertherove. Jer u četvrtom činu (slici) s Wertherom na rukama ostaje izbezumljena Lotta. Da i ona neće za njim otići u smrt možda nagovještava tek dječji pjev blagdanske pjesme koji dopire iz daljine...
