The soldier Wozzeck (Christian Gerhaher) flits through a world that he is unable to decipher. The doctor torments him with absurd medical experiments; the captain humiliates and ridicules him. And Wozzeck’s lover, Marie (Gun-Brit Barkmin), with whom he has a child, cuckolds him with the drum major. Wozzeck becomes a murderer, stabbing Marie to death. Georg Büchner’s drama fragment, on which Alban Berg based his first opera, is an unflinching case study of social injustice and human suffering. But it is also a grotesque piece that thrives on exaggeration – and in which only a fine line separates the unfathomable from the ridiculous. Accordingly, director Andreas Homoki forgoes all realism.

His nightmarishly radical production is inspired by puppet theatre. Christian Gerhaher’s role debut as Wozzeck can only be described as sensational: his capacity for vocal and dramatic subtlety is simply breath-taking. At the rostrum of the Philharmonia Zurich, Fabio Luisi explores both the expressionistic and the more intimate aspects, reminiscent of chamber music, in Berg’s seminal score.

Deeply moved by the destiny of the real Woyzeck, an old soldier condemned for having stabbed his mistress, Büchner wanted to use his play to condemn society as bearing the true responsibility for the soldier’s “criminality”. Berg builds on this vision, opening his opera with the captain’s admonishing his subordinate for having fathered a child outside of wedlock. Wozzeck responds that it is easier to be honest when one has money. To illustrate this tragic social determinism, Andreas Homoki recasts the opera’s protagonists as marionettes, each playing his role and perceiving his social status as an unavoidable destiny. A true story and unforgettable drama transformed into a fable musical for the ages.

Irrlichternd hetzt der Soldat Wozzeck durch eine Welt, die er nicht zu enträtseln vermag. Vom Doktor wird er mit absurden medizinischen Experimenten gequält, vom Hauptmann gedemütigt und verhöhnt. Und seine Geliebte Marie, mit der er ein Kind hat, betrügt ihn mit dem Tambour­major. Wozzeck wird zum Mörder und ersticht Marie.
Georg Büchners Dramenfragment, das Alban Berg als Vorlage für seine erste Oper nahm,  ist eine erbarmungslose Fallstudie über soziales Unrecht und menschliches Leid. Aber es ist auch eine Groteske, die von der Überzeichnung lebt; das Abgründige und das Lächerliche liegen ganz nahe bei­einander. In diesem Panoptikum erschei­nen die Figuren wie Marionetten, die letztendlich alle durch dieselbe existentielle Angst zum Zappeln gebracht werden. Alban Bergs Wozzeck, 1925 ur­aufgeführt und rund hundert Jahre nach Georg Büchners Drama entstanden, gehört zu den Gipfelwerken der Operngeschichte. Bergs expressionistischer Tonfall ist formal genial gefasst. Seine Partitur, so schrieb der Musikwissenschaftler Alfred Einstein, gleiche einem Nervenbündel: «Man meint zuerst, es seien nur wirre Drähte, aber es ist ein lebendiger Organismus. Die Vorgänge sind traumhaft; sie sind verzerrt wie in einem wüsten Traum. Auch alles Volkslied­hafte ist verzerrt, selbst das Geräusch wird Aus­druck, und der Naturalismus wird Stil.»
Bergs Wozzeck darf im Repertoire keines Opernhauses fehlen. In Zürich nehmen sich Regisseur Andreas Homoki und Generalmusikdirektor Fabio Luisi der Jahrhundertoper an. Der charismatische deutsche Bariton Christian Gerhaher gibt sein Rollendebüt als Wozzeck.

Alban Berg's Wozzeck, first performed in 1925 and written around a hundred years after Georg Büchner's drama, is one of the pinnacle works in operatic history. Berg's expressionistic intonation is brilliantly composed. Musicologist Alfred Einstein wrote that his score is like a bundle of nerves: “At first you think it's just tangled wires, but it's a living organism. The events are dreamlike; they are distorted like in a wild dream. Everything folk song-like is distorted, even the noise becomes expression, and naturalism becomes style.”
