The opera "Zaporozhets by the Danube" is the first opera whose libretto was written in Ukrainian. The first performer of the part of the main character Karasy was the author himself - Semyon Gulak-Artemovskyi. The idea of ​​creating the performance was suggested by a friend of the composer, the outstanding Ukrainian historian Mykola Kostomarov. The plot of the opera tells about the times when, after the destruction of the Zaporozhian Sich by Empress Catherine II in 1775, part of the Zaporozhians fled to Turkey. It was there that a new one, Transdanubia Sich, was created. Despite the fact that the system of life was similar to Zaporizhzhya Sich, the Cossacks missed their homeland and dreamed of returning to Ukraine. The Turkish government tried to use the Cossacks as a military force directed against their own homeland. But in 1828, during the Russo-Turkish war, part of the Cossacks returned to their homeland, and Transdanubia Sich was destroyed. It was these events that served as the source of the plot of the opera, but the composer reinterprets them and transfers them to the 18th century. But the meaning of the opera is not in these tragic events, but in the love for the Motherland, which warms every Ukrainian even in a foreign land.

In the center of the plot are the adventures of the Cossack Ivan Karas, who visited the Turkish Sultan himself and managed to free the Cossacks from captivity. There were also funny family quarrels between the main character and his "damn angry" wife Odarka. But there is also a romantic component in this opera - the love story of a young Zaporizhian Andriy and orphan Oksana.
The opera is full of comedy and colorful folk humor inherent in the Ukrainian people.
This is what ensures "Zaporozhets za Danube" constant success with the public for almost 160 years.

Опера “Запорожець за Дунаєм” – це перша опера, лібрето якої було написано українською мовою. Першим виконавцем партії головного героя Карася був сам автор – Семен Гулак-Артемовський. Ідею створення вистави підказав друг композитора – видатний український історик Микола Костомаров. Сюжет опери розповідає про часи, коли після знищення Запорізької Січі імператрицею Катериною ІІ в 1775 році, частина запорожців втекла до Туреччини. Саме там була створена нова, Задунайська Січ. Незважаючи на те, що устрій життя був схожий з Запорізькою Січчю, козаки тяжко сумували за Батьківщиною та мріяли повернутися до України. Турецький уряд намагався використати козаків як військову силу, спрямовану проти їхньої ж батьківщини. Але в 1828 році, під час російсько-турецької війни частина козаків повернулася на батьківщину, а Задунайську Січ було знищено. Саме ці події послужили джерелом сюжету опери, але композитор э переосмислює їх та переносить у XVIII століття. Але сенс опери не в цих трагічних подіях, а в любові до Батьківщини, яка зігріває кожного українця навіть на чужині.

В центрі сюжету – пригоди козака Івана Карася, який потрапив в  гості до самого турецького султана та домігся звільнення козаків з полону. Не обійшлося тут також без кумедних сімейних сварок головного героя з його “до біса сердитою” дружиною Одаркою. Але є в цій опері і романтична складова – історія кохання молодого запорожця Андрія та сироти Оксани.
Опера наповнена комізмом та колоритним народним гумором, притаманним українському народу.
Саме це і забезпечує “Запорожцю за Дунаєм” постійний успіх у публіки вже майже 160 років.
