A theater for a genre... La Zarzuela

Since its creation, the Teatro de la Zarzuela has been the meeting point for different generations of the public and for all those who are interested in Hispanic culture. In this venue, where the music of the Spanish lyrical genre has always been cultivated, the best works of its repertoire continue to be sung and heard and premiered what is already the zarzuela of the s. XXI.
The origins of the modern zarzuela were soon linked to those of its first and only venue created exclusively for the genre: the Teatro de La Zarzuela; whose history dates back to the 1950s, when the main promoters of the new genre: Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, Joaquín Gaztambide, Rafael Hernando, José Inzenga, Francisco Salas, Luis Olona and Cristóbal Oudrid, who had established the Musical Artistic Society, They decide to offer the public a modern and comfortable place -in tune with the new atmosphere that prevails in the city- next to the central street of Alcalá.
It is in this setting of the Jovellanos square where Gaztambide's oath is heard for the first time; The Diamonds in the Crown, Bread and Bulls and El barberillo de Lavapiés by Asenjo Barbieri; Giants and Bigheads and La Viejecita by Fernández Caballero; The Witch, The Small Homeland and The King Who Raged by Chapí; Chueca's batting; Bohemians, Maruxa and La villana de Vives; or El Caserío by Jesús Guridi, among many other authors and titles. During the second half of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century, the history of the genre and the coliseum is written by the musicians and poets, as well as by the actors and singers who, day by day, with their continuous premieres and reruns, keep the zarzuela alive. in his theatre.
Starting in 1984, the Ministry of Culture, as the absolute owner of the building, and through the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), prepares the first lyrical seasons, and in the absence of an opera house and an auditorium, hosts dance, flamenco, opera and zarzuela shows alike. In 1994 the coliseum was declared a National Monument, and four years later, after the last architectural reforms, the site recovered the original purpose for which it was created in 1856: the Spanish opera.
Today, the Teatro de la Zarzuela is a public theater, a treasure that belongs to us and that aspires for everyone to feel as their own: to inhabit it, enjoy it and transform it.
This theater is today the representative par excellence of the musical legacy of all the Spains that inhabit Spain. It has always maintained its maxim of being a theater for a genre and a genre for a theater. Because the zarzuela, that beautiful and fun artistic expression, is alive and still having fun.

Un teatro para un género... La Zarzuela

Desde su creación, el Teatro de la Zarzuela es el punto de encuentro de distintas generaciones de público y de todos aquellos que se acercan a la cultura hispana. En este recinto, donde siempre se ha cultivado la música del género lírico español, se siguen cantando y oyendo las mejores obras de su repertorio y estrenando lo que ya es la zarzuela del s. XXI.
Los orígenes de la zarzuela moderna se enlazan muy pronto con los de su primer y único recinto creado en exclusividad para el género: el Teatro de La Zarzuela; cuya historia se remonta a los años cincuenta del siglo XIX, cuando los principales promotores del nuevo género: Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, Joaquín Gaztambide, Rafael Hernando, José Inzenga, Francisco Salas, Luis Olona y Cristóbal Oudrid, que habían constituido la Sociedad Artístico Musical, deciden ofrecer al público un local moderno y confortable -a tono con los nuevos aires que corren en la ciudad- junto a la céntrica calle de Alcalá.
Es en este escenario de la plazuela de Jovellanos donde se escucha por primera vez El juramento de Gaztambide; Los diamantes de la corona, Pan y toros y El barberillo de Lavapiés de Asenjo Barbieri; Gigantes y cabezudos y La viejecita de Fernández Caballero; La bruja, La patria chica y El rey que rabió de Chapí; El bateo de Chueca; Bohemios, Maruxa y La villana de Vives; o El Caserío de Jesús Guridi, entre otros muchísimos autores y títulos. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y el ecuador del XX la historia del género y del coliseo es escrita por los músicos y poetas, así como por los actores y cantantes que día a día, con sus continuos estrenos y reposiciones, mantienen viva la zarzuela en su Teatro.
A partir de 1984 el Ministerio de Cultura, como propietario absoluto del edificio, y a través del Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM), prepara las primeras temporadas líricas, y a falta de un teatro de ópera y un auditorio, acoge por igual espectáculos de danza, flamenco, ópera y zarzuela. En 1994 el coliseo es declarado Monumento Nacional, y cuatro años más tarde, después de las últimas reformas arquitectónicas, el recinto recupera el cometido original para el que fue creado en 1856: la lírica española.
Hoy, el Teatro de la Zarzuela es un teatro público, un tesoro que nos pertenece y que aspira a que todos lo sientan como suyo: a que lo habiten, lo disfruten y lo transformen.
Este teatro es hoy el representante por excelencia del legado musical de todas las Españas que habitan en España. Ha mantenido siempre firme su máxima de ser un teatro para un género y un género para un teatro. Porque la zarzuela, esa bella y divertida expresión artística, está viva y aún se divierte.

The zarzuela Policías y ladrones is the penultimate commission from the Teatro de la Zarzuela, although the list of contemporary lyrical works dates back to the eighties and ninety of the last century with a cycle for the old Olympia Room. In addition, this title joins a series of new productions by Spanish authors on the same stage of the Plazuela de Jovellanos. On this occasion, Marco returns with a zarzuela, almost half a century since the premiere of Fuenteovejuna, by Moreno Buendía, in order to update, in a certain way, the genre. For the composer, this new production is "an artistic adventure that I think was worth trying", since it is about facing a new creative project, bringing political corruption to the scene with the intention of showing it as "a peculiar farce, without the seriousness of a devastating criticism, with the self-confidence and lightness of a plot whose intrigue incorporates the tension of 'suspense' in a display of types, figures, hypothetical incidents and credible absurdities». This new zarzuela, with a tragicomic tone, leaning towards sarcastic skepticism, will be musically attractive; The person in charge of leading the orchestra will be José Ramón Encinar, a maestro who knows contemporary music in the country like few others. And, according to the show's stage director herself, Carme Portaceli, this will be "as a kind of expiation, we are going to see if, through irony, through stage language that allows us to represent the horror of this story, like a fire on the night of San Juan,
