The Demon

Rimsky-Korsakov is the focus of the 2018 edition of the Bard Music Festival, but the organizers didn’t pick one of his works for the traditional fully-staged operatic preamble. Instead, they selected the little known The Demon by Rimsky’s older contemporary, Anton Rubinstein. For decades, Leon Botstein and his American Symphony Orchestra have specialized in reviving musical works they believe are unduly neglected. Obviously, true “discoveries” are rare. Many scores have been relegated to the footnotes of art history for good reasons, not just due to changes in taste. But there are still many meritorious works that can be occasionally brought forward for the enjoyment of that part of the public tired to attend performances of the same operas repeated again and again.

Tulsa Opera's 'Salome' wows with dazzling staging, fearless performances

Mintzer, who was making her debut in the role of Salome, was from start to finish extraordinary. This was a fearless, fully inhabited performance that required her to span her entire vocal range in addition to evoking all manner of dark emotions, and Mintzer sang with power, precision and nuance.

Verdi a la "Neorealismo"

Hervorragendes Schauspiel: Peter Bording ist ein in Baritonsaft stehender und singender Rigoletto von extrem hoher Emotionalität [...]. Vokal orientiert er sich dabei manchmal sehr an der "veristischen" Sangesmanie, das macht zwar Effekt, doch wenn man die Intensität der Darstellung noch mit einer etwas belkantistischen Ausformung des Gesanges verbinden würde, wäre es stupend, zuzutrauen wäre es ihm.

Rigoletto reloaded

Da ist ein stimmlich umwerfender Peter Bording, der den Rigoletto mit der Schönheit seines warmtönenden Baritons singt und trotzdem den verzweifelten Charakter des verlachten Parteigängers der Macht deutlich macht. Verstrickt in die Intrigen des Duca, kann er nicht mal seine eigene Tochter Gilda vor dessen Zugriff bewahren. Ergreifend, wie er mit ihr, der Geschändeten, weint.
