Judit Kutasi

Mezzosopran
Biografie: The Romanian-Hungarian mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi with her “deeper, dark” (Jenny Camilleri/ Bachtrack) voice is one of the most up-and-coming singers in her repertoire and leads critics to predict that she “will be the Verdi mezzo of the next years” (Maximilian Maier / BR Klassik). She begins the 2021/22 with one of her signature roles, Amneris in Verdi’s Aida in the famous Arena di Verona, where the young mezzo already performed in 2018 and 2019. At the Théâtre du Capitole, Judit Kutasi takes over the role of Laura (La Gioconda). At Deutsche Oper Berlin she can be seen as Erda, in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried in Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung as well as Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) – another of Judit Kutasi’s signature roles. Ulrica is also vehicle for her return to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where the mezzo-soprano ends her season after performing la Cieca (La Gioconda) with the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. As a regular guest artist at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Judit Kutasi appeared in the 2020/21 season as Erda in the new production of Das Rheingold under the musical direction of Sir Donald Runnicles. She also sang Laura in the concert performance of La Gioconda and jumped in with great success as Princess Eboli in a semi-staged version of Verdi’s Don Carlo. As Princess Eboli, the mezzosoprano was also part of an online streamed concert – a co-production of the Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti and the Teatro Municipale. At the Bavarian State Opera Judit Kutasi finished her season giving an acclaimed performance of her Amneris under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta. Performances as Eboli (Don Carlo) with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Cieca at the Scala and Laura (both La Gioconda) in Berlin, as well as Amneris in Verona and Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) at the Teatro Maggio Musicale Florence were cancelled due to the COVID19 pandemic, the later was performed in concert in July 2021. The opening night of Falstaff (Mrs Quickly) with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich took place without audience as a live stream. Highlights of past seasons include her house debut at the Gran Teatre de Liceu Barcelona as Amneris in Verdi’s Aida in the 2019/2020 season. With great success Judit Kutasi took on the role of Maddalena alongside Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov in Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at Teatro alla Scala Milano. This production was musically led by Riccardo Chailly and released on DVD by the theatre in a coproduction with CMajor. Furthermore, Kutasi was a guest at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm and traveled to the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile for her interpretation of Maddalena (Rigoletto). The Romanian mezzo-soprano is also a sought-after artist on the concert stage. Under the musical direction of Ivan Repušic and the Munich Radio Orchestra she sang Federica in Verdi’s Luisa Miller (CD production of BR Klassik). At the Musikfest Berlin she sang the roles of Waltraute (Die Walküre) and Erda (Siegfried) under the baton of Donald Runnicles. With Maestro Runnicles she also performed Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the BBC Proms together with the World Orchestra for Peace. Judit Kutasi appeared as Catherine (Jeanne d’Arc au Bucher) with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam (CD production of RCO Live) and opened the Budapest Spring Festival at MÜPA as Sophie in Liszt’s The Legend of Saint Elizabeth. At Teatro all Scala in Milan she sang Bruckner’s Te Deum and performed in the opera house’s new year’s concert in 2019. Under the musical direction of Daniel Harding, the mezzo-soprano interpreted Mrs Quickly (Falstaff) in a collaboration with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and sang Grimgerde (Die Walküre) under Sir Andrew Davis at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Judit Kutasi was a Walter Sandvoss Fellow of Förderkreis der Deutschen Oper Berlin in 2016/17 and has been a very popular and celebrated guest artist at the Deutsche Oper ever since. On this opera stage the young artist has already sung many roles: among others Laura and La Cieca (La Gioconda), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Fenena (Nabucco), 3rd Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Page (Salome), Bersi (Andrea Chenier) and Azucena (Il Trovatore). In the 2013/14 season, the mezzo-soprano was part of the International Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera and directly after became a permanent ensemble member of Zurich Opera until 2016. During this time, the young artist was able to gain her first experiences and was heard as Mary (Der fliegende Holländer), Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Governess (Pique Dame), Alisa (Lucia di Lammermoor), Mrs Quickly (Falstaff), Page (Salome), Wowkle (La Fanciulla del West), and a voice from above (Die Frau ohne Schatten), and many more.
