The pairing of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci seems to resist any attempt to decouple, which could be a result of clinging to tradition or, more likely, because they really fit well together. The two stories are of similar nature, and they share a musical language rooted in verismo. Conductor Paolo Carignani gave a truthful interpretation of this shared language, leading the Philharmonia Zürich in an emotional, passionate reading of the scores. The chorus in both operas has a very prominent role, and their part is particularly difficult, both vocally and rhythmically. The voices were excellent, showing no strain even in the most arduous passages, but they struggled at times with the rhythm: Carignani had to work hard to keep the chorus at the same tempo as the orchestra. Perhaps this was due to reduced rehearsal time in a reprise; hopefully these snags will be ironed out in the rest of the run.

Wie soll man als Rezensent einen solchen Opernabend würdigen, bei dem Superlative nicht auszureichen scheinen, um den gewaltigen emotionalen Eindrücken, denen man ausgesetzt war, gerecht zu werden? Von den mit bewegender Sensibilität intonierten Passagen der Streicher in der Introduktion zu Mascagnis CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA bis zur erschütternden Feststellung des Doppelmörders Canio am Ende von PAGLIACCI "La commedia è finita!" war man einem bis ins Knochenmark ergreifenden, ununterbrochenen Gefühlsstrudel ausgesetzt, an einem Abend, bei dem einfach alles passte, szenisch UND musikalisch. Grischa Asagaroffs Inszenierung in der Ausstattung Luigi Peregos hat seit ihrer Premiere vor 13 Jahren nichts an Stimmigkeit verloren, ja eher noch an Intensität dazugewonnen. Die genaue Charakterisierung der Rollen, die detailreiche Führung des Chors und das genaue Setting trugen zur überwältigenden Gesamtwirkung der beiden veristischen Reisser entscheidend bei. Wirth has accompanied Thomas Hampson in recital, and the baritone played the role of Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses for which Littell wrote the libretto. Their intimate knowledge of Hampson’s voice and artistry undoubtedly contributed to their creation of the character of Vermeer, in which they provided the singer with a role that is the perfect capstone to his long career.

L’excitation d’une création mondiale suscite toujours des attentes. En particulier celle de Girl with a Pearl Earring à l’Opernhaus de Zurich cette saison. Stefan Wirth, compositeur suisse de 47 ans, jouit d’une réputation certaine ; Thomas Hampson et Laura Aikin ont rejoint l’aventure et le petit génie discret de la mise en scène (et excellent librettiste) Ted Huffman rempile à la réalisation scénique. Girl with a Pearl Earring rejoint aussi la liste des œuvres lyriques qui trouvent leurs origines dans une double filiation littéraire et cinématographique, puisque le livret est extrait du roman éponyme de Tracy Chevalier (1999) et surtout de son adaptation cinématographique de 2003 (Peter Webber avec Scarlett Johansson dans le rôle de Griet).

An allererster Stelle sei hier das Debut von Hanna-Elisabeth Müller als Arabella genannt. Was für eine wunderschöne facettenreiche Stimme. Auch schauspielerisch gestaltete sie ihre Partie sehr überzeugend. Gewiss wird Arabella eine ihrer Glanzpartien werden. Ein Genuss! Zum ersten Mal an diesem Hause hörte man in der Rolle der Zdenka die Sopranistin Anett Fritsch. Sie gestaltete diese Partie mit höhensicherer Stimme und viel Energie. Die fast unsingbare Rolle der Fiakermilli war mit der temperamentvollen Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk gut besetzt. Sie meisterte die Koloraturen souverän. Die Partie der besorgten Mutter Adelaide war bei Judith Schmid bestens aufgehoben. Die Kartenauflegerin gestaltete Irène Friedli.

In Gideon Davey's unified set - the lobby of a four-story Viennese hotel with balustrades - the colors red and black of the Reich, predominate. An art deco chandelier dangles from the stage tower, completing the evocation of the zeitgeist. Arabella's three suitors are dressed in the uniform of the SS. It makes perfect sense, then, to see in the closing bars a Nazi mob violently question the happy-ending of Strauss's opera, by pointing guns to Mandryka, the Croatian outsider and love rival of the officers. The zeitgeist will break into the play by three other occasions. Two banners with swastikas can be seen along either side of the stage during the ball of the second act. The Fiakermilli, mouthpiece of the vox populi, dressed in a folkish dirndl plays a pantomime with young peasants. Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk adds her yodeling coloratura effectively. The scenic highlight is reserved for the interlude that normally comments on Zdenka and Matteo's love night but is here enlivened by Philippe Giraudeau's choreography as a street fight between brown shirts and young peasants wearing lederhosen.
