At first he studied conducting in Mexico City - until he had to pre-rig a piece from "Tosca" during his studies and canceled the singer, who was actually obliged to do so, at short notice. The result: When Montero spontaneously took over the vocals, his vocal talent was discovered by his professor. In 1999, the tenor moved to the Salzburg Mozarteum to continue his singing studies with Heiner Hopfner. In 2001, Joel Montero won the Special Prize of the Montserrat Caballé Competition in Andorra and was awarded the Luigi Infantino Prize in Romania the following year at the tenor competition "Traian Grozavescu". From 2001 to 2008, he was a member of the ensemble at the Meiningen Theater and from 2010 to 2014 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. During this time he
