Her operatic debut was in 1996 with Dido and Aeneas. That same year she took part in different operatic events throughout Spain, La Bohème by Puccini, Rigoletto by Verdi and L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti among others.She was also invited as soloist in multiple concerts. During the 1996-97 season, María José Moreno won the XXXIV Francisco Viñas Singing International Contest in Barcelona and rendered her first performance at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid in La Fille du Régiment by Donizetti, conducted by Stefano Ranzani.
