After Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies — and especially after his overwhelming ninth with the "Ode to Joy" — the limits, form and structure of a symphony finally seem to have been "exploded". Numerous composers work their way through Beethoven's overpowering shadow and create works that break new ground. At the end of the 19th century, Gustav Mahler in particular repeatedly reached new dimensions with his symphonies, both in terms of content and in questions of instrumentation and the expansion of traditional formal schemes.

Long before his »Symphony of a Thousand« he wrote a work of unprecedented proportions: the »3. Symphony« from the years 1895-96. Unlike his other symphonies, the Third is downright optimistic, looking at the world in its totality of nature and life. Mahler himself aptly called it a »summer afternoon dream« — a perfect start to the new concert season!

Nach Ludwig van Beethovens neun Sinfonien — und speziell nach seiner überwältigenden Neunten mit der »Ode an die Freude« — scheinen die Grenzen, Gestalt und Aufbau einer Sinfonie endgültig ›gesprengt‹. Zahlreiche Komponisten arbeiten sich am übermächtigen Schatten Beethovens ab und kreieren Werke, die neue Wege weisen. Gerade Gustav Mahler erreicht im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert mit seinen Sinfonien immer wieder neue Dimensionen, sowohl auf inhaltlicher Seite, aber auch in Fragen der Besetzung und Ausweitung traditioneller Formschemata.

Lange vor seiner »Sinfonie der Tausend« schreibt er ein Werk von bis dahin un-erhörtem Ausmaß: die »3. Sinfonie« aus den Jahren 1895-96. Im Gegensatz zu seinen anderen Sinfonien ist die Dritte regelrecht optimistisch, ein Blick auf die Welt in ihrer Ganzheit aus Natur und Leben. Mahler selbst nannte sie treffend einen »Sommermittagstraum« — ein perfekter Start in die neue Konzertsaison!
