»In the summer I wrote something along the lines of the Lied vd Erde« – this is how Alexander Zemlinsky announced to his publisher in 1922 that he was composing the Lyric Symphony. And even if the literary model by the Bengali poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore seems exotic, Zemlinsky remains committed to late romantic music in this work with its yearning style and leitmotif technique. He combines seven independently written poems set to music by Zemlinsky for soprano and baritone, connected by interludes, to form a meaningful plot; They describe the beginning and end of a passionate love in a visually stunning way.
