Wie seine Vorgänger hat auch dieses Werk ein Programm. Doch anders als in seiner Zwei­ten Symphonie entwarf Gustav Mahler in der Nachfolgerin unter dem Titel »Ein Sommer­mittagstraum« eine musikalische Kosmologie: von der unbeseelten Materie über Pflanzen, Tiere, Menschen, Engel bis hinauf zur gött­lichen Liebe. Schon der Anfang – halb Marsch, halb Volkslied – wirkt wie Musik von vor dem Beginn der Zivilisation: eisern, monolithisch, wie ein Bergmassiv. Selbstbewusst sprengte der Komponist in der Dritten mit seiner riesi­gen Besetzung alle bisherigen Grenzen. »Sym­phonie heißt mir eben: mit allen Mitteln der vorhandenen Technik eine Welt aufbauen.«

Like its predecessors, this work also has a programme. But unlike in his Second Symphony, Gustav Mahler designed a musical cosmology in the follow-up entitled »A Summer Midday Dream«: from inanimate matter to plants, animals, people, angels and up to divine love. Even the beginning – half march, half folk song – sounds like music from before the dawn of civilization: iron, monolithic, like a mountain massif. The composer self-confidently broke all previous limits in the third with his huge cast. »Symphony means to me: building a world with all the means of available technology.«

A free concert introduction with Hagen Kunze takes place 45 minutes before the start in the opera cellar.
