Unsuk Chin, born in Seoul and a student of Ligeti, lives in Berlin. "Subito con forza" was written in 2020 for Beethoven's 250th birthday, making it an ideal complement to Beethoven's "Triple Concerto", one of the few concertos for piano trio and orchestra. Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony as the first major orchestral work after being attacked by Stalin himself in Pravda. In his novel The Noise of Time, Julian Barnes describes the nightmares suffered by a freelance artist in the days of Stalinism.
