The notations cover the life's work of the French composer Pierre Boulez, who is considered one of the central figures of new music after the Second World War. In 1945 he first created his 12 Notations for solo piano - a debut work that consists of twelve pieces of twelve bars each and has a clear connection to twelve-tone technique. About three decades later, Boulez expanded the miniatures for piano into the powerful sound notations for orchestra, which are characterized by an expressionistic intensity and a melodic and rhythmic complexity. Under the direction of Cornelius Meister, who was once Boulez's assistant, this key work of new music will be combined with Anton Bruckner's Eighth Symphony. The Eighth begins darkly and fatefully, the long process of its creation being accompanied by numerous reworkings and self-doubts on the part of the composer. It is the most extensive and largest of Bruckner's symphonies. He himself described this monumental work as a “mystery”. At the premiere in 1892 in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association, the audience roared with enthusiasm. After each sentence, Bruckner had to bow several times on stage and at the end he accepted three large laurel wreaths.

Die Notations umspannen das Lebenswerk des französischen Komponisten Pierre Boulez, der als eine der zentralen Figuren der Neuen Musik nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gilt. Im Jahr 1945 schuf er zunächst seine 12 Notations für Klavier solo – ein Erstlingswerk, das aus zwölf Stücken von jeweils zwölf Takten besteht und eine deutliche Verbindung zur Zwölftontechnik aufweist. Etwa drei Jahrzehnte später weitete Boulez die Miniaturen für Klavier zu den klanggewaltigen Notations für Orchester aus, die sich durch eine expressionistische Intensität und eine melodische sowie rhythmische Vielschichtigkeit auszeichnen. Unter der Leitung von Cornelius Meister, der einst Boulez’ Assistent war, wird dieses Schlüsselwerk der Neuen Musik mit Anton Bruckners Achter Sinfonie kombiniert. Düster und schicksalhaft beginnt die Achte, deren langer Entstehungsprozess von zahlreichen Umarbeitungen und Selbstzweifeln des Komponisten begleitet war. Sie ist die umfangreichste und am größten besetzte von Bruckners Sinfonien. Er selbst bezeichnete dieses monumentale Werk als „Mysterium“. Bei der Uraufführung 1892 im Goldenen Saal des Wiener Musikvereins tobte das Publikum vor Begeisterung. Nach jedem Satz musste sich Bruckner mehrmals auf der Bühne verbeugen und zum Schluss nahm er drei große Lorbeerkränze entgegen.
