The magician of the title is how a maiden describes the man for whom she felt a strong attraction. She blushed and stammered but allowed him to lead her into the bushes. Just in time, along came the girl‘s mother to save her virtue. The text is by Christian Weisse.

Ach neige, du Schmerzenreiche Scene aus Faust Op 9 H IX No 1 Loewe

Gretchen prays in distress to the Virgin Mary, asking for her pity. Her heart is breaking, her tears fall on the flowers she has brought. She is in disgrace, expecting a child out of wedlock and deserted by her lover, and wishes for Mary to understand her sorrow. This is a scene from Goethe’s Faust.

The faithless shepherdess Seven Elizabethan Lyrics Quilter

Philon the shepherd sits under a tree, playing on his pipe. His song is of lost love – the shepherdess who loved him for three days and forgot him in the next three days. The text is from an anonymous source.

The poet asks the fountains to cease their weeping. The sun is asleep, bringing reconciliation and much-needed rest. The text is by Ben Jonson.

Singet nicht in Trauertönen Op 98a No 7 Schumann

Sung by Philine, a character in Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, this spirited song extols the joys of the night. We should not think it sad and lonely, as it is the time for loving. The daytime is so tedious and stressful, and we long for midnight, when all the fun begins.

In this setting of a pastoral poem by Théophile de Viau, the poet tells his beloved Chloris that if it is true that she loves him, he is happier than a king, and would not exchange his good fortune for the joy of heaven.

Do not sing to me, my beauty Op 4 No 4 Rachmaninov

The poet does not want to be reminded of the sad songs of Georgia. He recalls the Steppes, and a girl, far away. The poem is by Pushkin.

Bolero Rossini

You are cruel to let me suffer, says the singer to his beloved. He will suffer in silence, but can never stop loving her. The text is by Metastasio.

Pace non trovo Tre Sonetti di Petrarca Liszt

The poet is in turmoil. He can find no peace, but is not inclined to war. He is both up in heaven and down on earth; he holds nothing but embraces the whole world. He is in love’s prison cell, which he can neither lock nor unlock; love will neither slay him nor release him. Weeping and laughing in turn, he is repelled by both life and death, and the cause of all this torment is his lady love. The text is Petrarch’s sonnet 134.

The black girl, Atilia, sets off before dawn to the Porlamar market with her basket, full of everything from Chinese cotton flannel to playing cards, Spanish alcohol to soap. By sunrise, she has sold everything.

De fleurs Proses lyriques Debussy

Debussy wrote his own text for this song, which refers to the symbolism of flowers in a similar vein to Baudelaire in his Fleurs du mal. The poet is sick from love, with the flowers of pain wrapping themselves around his heart and his head. Irises remind him of his beloved’s eyes; he will never know joy again and he prays and cries in his hothouse of pain.

Sweeter than roses Purcell

This comes from incidental music written by Purcell for Richard Norton's drama, Pausanias. Pandora is an ambitious woman, and she has an assignation with Argilius, whom she intends to blackmail. While she waits for him, an attendant sings this song of seduction, intended to put Pandora in the mood for love.

In ‘Like the rose in the garden’, a dying young girl is compared to the flowers which have not opened. It was a sad day when she fell ill – as sad as for a queen on her deathbed. The text is a Spanish translation of a Ladino (Sephardic) folksong.

In the silence of the night Op 4 No 3 Rachmaninov

The poet will be silent throughout the mysterious night, remembering the beloved’s smile, her voice, her hair. He will recognise them all, and think of when they were together and their words of love, awakening the night with the cherished name.

Widmung Myrthen Op 25 No 1 Schumann

In 'Dedication', the poet tells the beloved that she is everything to him - his soul, heart, bliss, pain, the world in which he lives, heaven, the grave, repose and peace. Her love makes him worthy of her and raises him above himself. The text is by Friedrich Rückert.

Ideale Tosti

The singer is absorbed by thoughts of his ‘ideal’. He feels her presence in the air and the perfume of flowers, her radiance filling his solitary room. He dreamed of the sound of her voice and all his worries were forgotten. He wishes she would return for a moment to smile at him again, her face shining like a new dawn. The text is by Carmelo Errico.

Die Nacht Op 10 No 3 R Strauss

Night comes from the forest and steals the colours and lights of the world, taking all we hold dear. She steals the silver of the stream and the gold from the cathedral’s roof. The singer tells his beloved to draw closer, afraid that night will steal her too away from him. The text is by Hermann von Gilm.

Does the day reign? Op 47 No 6 Tchaikovsky

Whether it is day or night, whether the poet is awake of asleep, he thinks only of the beloved. All that is good – love, courage, hope – live in his heart. Wherever life takes him, even to death, all his strength and positive feelings are because of his love for her. The poem is by Apukhtin.
