The good-natured boy Jack lives with his mother in a small, broken-down house. One day, their only cow, Milchweiß, stopped giving milk. In order not to become completely impoverished, Jack has to sell her. On the way to the village, a strange little man appears and offers him magic beans for the cow. Jack agrees and happily hurries home. But his mother is not at all enthusiastic about this exchange. Angry, she throws the seemingly useless beans out the window and sends sad Jack to bed without food. The next morning, however, a large tendril has grown from the beans up into the sky. Jack bravely climbs it and reaches a kingdom of clouds where an evil giant lives. An exciting adventure begins...

Composer Andreas N. Tarkmann and lyricist Jörg Schade edited the Old English fairy tale for the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2012 in order to enable the young audience to experience the tonal variety of a symphonic orchestra. They connect the fairy tale characters and exciting situations with specific instruments and characteristic motifs. The audience can thus immerse themselves in a fantastic world from everyday life, where the bright trumpet announces the magician, vibraphone, glockenspiel and harp bring the magical shine of the beans into our ears and the dark bassoon group and timpani shake the ground under the heavy steps of the giant … Off to an adventure with the Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra!
