Beide Komponisten verbanden Wortkunst und Tonkunst zu einer Einheit: Berlioz, der in Paris als scharfzüngiger Rezensent das musikalische Geschehen betrachtete, und Schumann, der mit der „Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik“ in Deutschland ein Medium schuf, welches das Neue in der Musik in Worte fasste. Werke beider Meister geben diesem Konzertprogramm ein Profil. Robert Schumann brachte mit seiner 2. Sinfonie ein Panoptikum an romantischen Sinnbildern. Sie atmet Klangschönheit und Zerrissenheit wie kaum ein anderes Werk aus seiner Feder. Zwischen
dem Kontrapunkt Bachs und dem ewig schwebenden Damoklesschwert Beethovens changierend ist diese Sinfonie eines der modernsten und unkonventionellsten Werke Schumanns. Die Konvention grundsätzlich infrage zu stellen ist Ausgangspunkt vieler Werke des Franzosen Hector Berlioz. Doch vielmehr charakterisiert sein OEuvre die Verbindung
seines Privatlebens mit seinem künstlerischen Schaffen. So wie seine Arbeit an seiner „Symphonie fantasique“ oder der Sinfoniekantate „Roméo et Juliette“ mit seiner Liebe zur Schauspielerin Hariett Smithson verwoben ist, spielt sein Gefühlsleben dann auch beim Entstehungsprozess des Zyklus „Les nuits d‘été“ eine zentrale Rolle. Die „Scène d’amour“
aus „Roméo et Juliette“ einerseits und der Liederzyklus anderseits umschreiben die intensive Verbindung zweier Menschen und umklammern zwei Eckpfeiler im Schaffen Berlioz’.

Both composers combined the art of words and the art of music to form a unit: Berlioz, who viewed the musical events in Paris as a sharp-tongued reviewer, and Schumann, who created a medium in Germany with the "Neue Magazin für Musik" that put the new in music into words . It breathes beauty of sound and inner turmoil like hardly any other work from his pen. In between
alternating with Bach's counterpoint and Beethoven's eternally hovering sword of Damocles, this symphony is one of Schumann's most modern and unconventional works. Fundamentally questioning convention is the starting point for many works by the French artist Hector Berlioz. Rather, his oeuvre characterizes the connection between
his private life and his artistic work. Just as his work on his "Symphonie fantasique" or the symphonic cantata "Roméo et Juliette" is interwoven with his love for the actress Hariett Smithson, his emotional life also plays a central role in the process of creating the cycle "Les nuits d'été". The "scene d'amour"
from "Roméo et Juliette" on the one hand and the song cycle on the other describe the intensive connection between two people and embrace two cornerstones in Berlioz's work.
